The following specialists are the consultants chosen by Cancer Consultants to make up their pool of experts. All are leaders and innovators in their respective fields related to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, including Pathology, Medical Oncology, Genetic Counselling, Radiotherapy, Cancer Surgery, Haematology and Paediatric Oncology. We also collaborate from time to time with prestigious external consultants when evaluating some particularly unusual cases.

Bosch i Albareda, Francesc (Haematology)  

Dr. Bosch was awarded a degree with distinction in Medicine and Surgery in 1988 from the University of Barcelona. He was awarded the title of Medical Doctor "Cum Laude" from the University of Barcelona in 1998. In the same year, he was given an Extraordinary Doctorate Award. He did his residency in the speciality of Haematology and Haemotherapy in the Haematological Service of the Hospital Clínic. From 1998 until 2000 he carried out molecular biology studies in chronic lymphatic leukaemia at the Institute of Cancer Genetics at Columbia University in New York. Since 1996, he has occupied the post of Senior Specialist in the Haematology Service in Barcelona's Hospital Clínico, has also formed part of the medical team at the Instituto Oncológico Teknon and now is working at the Instituto Oncológico Baselga, Quirón Hospital, Barcelona.

Since 1994 his main line of investigation has been the study of the biological and clinical aspects of the chronic lymphoproliferative syndromes, especially in chronic lymphatic leukaemia and mantle cell lymphomas. He is one of those responsible for the protocols of research and treatment of the chronic lymphoproliferative syndromes (chronic lymphatic leukaemia and lymphomas) of the Catalonia and Baleares Lymphoma Research Group (GELCAB) and of the national co-operative group PETHEMA. Furthermore, in the therapeutic field of these illnesses, he has developed treatment protocols of world-wide relevance, such as the FCM combination for chronic lymphatic leukaemia or follicular lymphomas, and he is one of the national experts in the use of monoclonal antibodies such as Campath-1H.

He is a member of the Catalan Society of Haematology, of the Spanish Association of Haematology and Haemotherapy, of the European Haematology Association, of the American Society of Haematology (ASH) and he is a founder member of the Catalonia and Baleares Lymphoma Research Group (GELCAB). He has also received numerous awards for his scientific contributions, amongst which the Young European Investigation Award 1997 from the European Haematology Association, which he received in 1997, is especially worthy of mention. He has published more than 80 original articles, including contributions to the most important haematological and oncological journals (Cancer Cell, Blood, Cancer Research, Journal of Clinical Oncology, American Journal of Pathology, New England Journal of Medicine, etc.). In addition, he has published over 150 communications and book chapters.

Calvo, Emiliano (Medical Oncology) subir

Dr. Emiliano Calvo finished his studies in Medicine at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 1993, having received a study grant from the Boston University School of Medicine, USA. He became a specialist in Medical Oncology at the Clínica Universitaria de Navarra in 1997, where he continued as specialist in the Oncological Department and Associated Professor of Oncology in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Navarra. There, between 1998 and 2000, he developed and consolidated the long-distance, postal consultancy service of Second Opinion in Oncology for this institution. From 2003, for a period of two years, he worked as an oncology doctor at the Institute for Drug Development of the Cancer Therapy and Research Center in San Antonio, Texas, USA, widening and consolidating his specialisation in new cancer drugs. During this time, he was also a clinical investigator at the National Cancer Institute, Maryland, USA. Since 2005, he has been working in the Medical Oncology Department at the Hospital Vall d'Hebron, Barcelona, where he is Senior Specialist in the areas of Genitourinary Tumours and Sarcomas and Development of New Cancer Drugs; he also worked as a Consultant at the Instituto Oncológico Teknon and now is working at the Instituto Oncológico Baselga, Quirón Hospital, Barcelona.

He received his European Certificate in Medical Oncology from the European Society of Medical Oncology in Athens, Greece in 1998 and is a Doctor in Medical Oncology of the University of Navarra (July 2003) with a distinction "cum laude" by unanimity for his doctoral thesis on cancer of the colon. He has written approximately 150 national and international publications, especially about digestive and genitourinary tumours and the development of new drugs. These publications include scientific articles, chapters in oncology books and communications at different conferences. He has also participated in the development of numerous national and international clinical investigations. He reviews various oncology journals and is an active member of the Sociedad Española de Oncología Médica (Spanish Society of Medical Oncology), of the European Society of Medical Oncology, of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and of the American Association of Cancer Research. He is also a Faculty member of the Clinical Trials and Systemic Therapy Group, of the Educational Committee of the European Society of Medical Oncology.

Calvo, Felipe (Radiotherapy) subir

Dr. Felipe A. Calvo qualified in Medicine with a distinction at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 1978. He specialised in Radiotherapeutic Oncology at the Clínica Puerta de Hierro, Madrid, in 1982, and in the same year went to complete his training as a Senior Fellow at the Radiotherapy Unit of the Royal Marsden Hospital, London. He was Director of the Radiotherapy Service of the Clínica Universitaria de Navarra between 1985 and 1991. During this period he developed an ambitious programme of integration of Radiotherapy in the multidisciplinary treatment of cancer, which included the administration of radiotherapy with concomitant radiopotentiator chemotherapy, and the intraoperative radiotherapy technique, in which he was a world pioneer. During this period, he was also a Member of the Oncology Commission and sub director of the Oncological Department of the Clínica Universitaria de Navarra. In 1992, for two years, he widened and consolidated his experience in Radiotherapy as Attending Physician in the Department of Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia. From 1993, he was Director of the Oncology Department at the Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón in Madrid.

He obtained his PhD in Radiotherapy, with an extraordinary award, at the University of Navarra in 1986 and was Assistant Professor of Radiology and Physical Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Navarra between 1987 and 1990. In 1992 and 1993 he was Full Professor of the Department of Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, and from 1995 he was Professor assigned to Radiotherapeutic Oncology at the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Complutense in Madrid. He was also President of the Comisión Nacional de Oncología Radioterápica (National Commission of Radiotherapeutic Oncology) from 1990 to 1998. From 1985 he was Clinical Investigator of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG), Philadelphia, and since 1993 he has been Investigator of the Radiotherapy Group of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC). He was appointed President of the Radiotherapeutic Oncology Clinical Investigation Group in 1998. In the same year, he also became member of the Comisión Nacional de Radio-física Hospitalaria (National Commission of Hospital Radio-physics) and held this position until 2001. He has directed 7 doctoral theses and is the author of 5 books, co-editor of 9 and co-author of 53 chapters in books by other authors. He has over 150 scientific publications in national and international oncology journals, as well as over 300 communications at national and international Conferences on the specialty.

Cortes, Javier (Medical Oncology) subir

Dr. Javier Cortes has a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (1996). He continued his studies at the University of Navarra, specialising in Medical Oncology at the Clínica Universitaria de Navarra, where he continued as Assistant in the Department of Oncology from 2002. He was Associated Professor of Oncology in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Navarra during this period. Later, since 2003, he has worked in the Department of Medical Oncology at the Hospital Vall d' Hebron, Barcelona, where he is Coordinator of the Teaching and Training Programme for Residents in Oncology and Senior Specialist in the Area of Breast Cancer with a special interest and specialisation in Cancer Immunotherapy. In addition, he has been a Consultant at the Instituto Oncológico Teknon, and now is working at the Instituto Oncológico Baselga, Quirón Hospital, Barcelona.

He was awarded the title of Doctor in Medical Oncology from the University of Navarra (2002), with a distinction "cum laude" given unanimously for his doctoral thesis on lung cancer. He is the author of about one hundred publications, especially about breast and pulmonary tumours and new drugs. These publications include scientific articles, chapters in oncology books and communications at different conferences. He actively participates in the development of numerous national and international clinical investigations, especially in relation to drugs directed against molecular targets and new chemotherapy agents, and he is an ad hoc reviewer of various oncology journals.

García Foncillas, Jesús (Medical Oncology and Predisposition to Cancer) subir

Dr. Jesús García-Foncillas got his degree in Medicine at the Universidad de Zaragoza, and later carried out his Residency in Medical Oncology and his PhD in the Clínica Universitaria de Navarra and Navarra University respectively. He completed his training with different periods spent in foreign centres such as the Karonlinska Institute in Stockholm, the MIT in Boston, the Cytometry Unit of the University of Nebraska and the M.D. Anderson Cancer Centre in Houston. During his professional career he has directed the Oncology Laboratory at the Clínica Universitaria de Navarra and at present coordinates the Biotechnology Laboratory at the Clínica Universitaria. He is also responsible for the Cancer Pharmacogenomic Laboratory in the Centro de Investigación Médica Aplicada (Centre of Applied Medical Investigation) at the University of Navarra. Since 2004, he has been Director of the Oncology Department of the Clínica Universitaria de Navarra, where he is also coordinator of the Digestive Tumours Area and of Genetic Counselling. He is expert Consultant in these areas.

He is professor of Oncology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Navarra and of the Masters in Biotechnology of the Consejo Superior of Investigaciones Científicas (Higher Council of Scientific Research), as well as being an academic at the Royal Academy of Medicine of Zaragoza, an honorary member of the Mexican Society of Oncology and of the Federations of Oncological Societies in Latin America. He is the author of a great many publications in scientific journals, books, chapters and communications given at Conferences on the specialty, both nationally and internationally.

López-Guillermo, Armando (Haematology) subir

Doctor "Cum Laude" in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Barcelona, with an extraordinary award in the year 1989. Degree in Medicine and Surgery from the same university in 1983 and specialist in Haematology and Haemotherapy. He trained in the Haematology Service of the Hospital Clínic, and was Research Fellow between 1995 and 1996 in the Lymphoma and Myeloma Department of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Hospital in Houston (Texas, USA). At present he is a consultant with the Haematology Service of the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona, was a member of the medical team at the Instituto Oncológico Teknon and now is working at the Instituto Oncológico Baselga, Quirón Hospital, Barcelona.

He is a member of the European Haematology Association and the American Society of Haematology (ASH). He is also a member of the following work groups and scientific committees: PHETEMA Group (Management Committee, in charge of NHL trials, 1996-2001) GELCAB (Grupo Catalán de Estudio de Linfomas or Catalan Lymphoma Research Group, since 1996), International Follicular Lymphoma Prognostic Factors Project (1996-2004), International Follicular Lymphoma Prognostic Factors Project-F2: Executive Committee (since 2002), European Mantle Cell Lymphoma Study Group (since 1997), International Extranodal Lymphoma Study Group: Management Committee (2004), Leukaemia Lymphoma Molecular Profiling Project, NCI (1998-present), Leukaemia Lymphoma Molecular Profiling Project, NCI (since 1998), President of the Scientific Committee for the meeting of the Spanish Haematology Association (2004). He was the author of 110 publications and articles in scientific journals between 1994 and 2005.

Pardo, Javier (Pathology) subir

Dr. Javier Pardo is Head of Pathology and consultant at the Pathology Department of the Clínica Universitaria de Navarra. His career as an educator began in 1978, as Assistant Professor by Examination in the Histology and Pathology Chair at the University of Salamanca. Twelve years later, in 1990, he obtained the title of Head of the Department of Pathology at the University of Alicante. Since 1991 he has been Professor of Pathology at the University of Navarra.

He is the Retiring President of the Spanish Society of Pathology, a representative of the Spanish Society of Pathology in the European Union of Medical Specialties, and Secretary of the European Association of Teaching Departments. He is the author of more than 400 publications in national and international scientific journals, and has written various articles of special relevance in the speciality, including:

Sierrasesúmaga, Luis (Paediatric Oncology) subir

Dr. Luis Sierrasesúmaga, director of the Paediatric department of the Clínica Universitaria, is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Association of Paediatrics. Dr. Sierrasesúmaga got his primary degree and doctorate in Medicine at the University of Navarra, and is a specialist in Paediatric Oncology and in bone marrow transplant. He spent several periods at foreign universities (Christie Hospital and Holt Radium Institute, Manchester; Roswell Park Memorial Institute, Buffalo, New York), and then joined the Paediatric department of the Clínica Universitaria, where he has been director since 1993.

Dr. Sierrasesúmaga is also a Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Navarra and has published over a hundred articles in national and international scientific journals as well as approximately eighty chapters in specialised books.
